My Top 10 Photos of the year (Micro Four Thirds)
I think 2018 has been a great year for my photography outside of my commissioned work. I’ve evolved my colour grading quite a bit, and I think — even through sheer practice and time spent on photography — my skills have improved quite a bit.
That’s one of the reasons why I love photography so much: There’s always room to improve. There’s always a new skill to learn, a new technique to try, a new project to take on.
Isn’t that all a bit cool?
I’ve decided to keep this list to my “passion project” photography — as in, not any commissioned wedding or portrait work. I may make a seprate list for that.
Anyway, without further any more waffling, here are my top 10 images of 2018.
Adapting Pentax 110 lenses to Micro Four Thirds
Pentax 110 lenses can very easily be adapted to micro four thirds cameras. The 110 “sensor” size is m43 sized so you don’t even need a fancy or expensive adapter to do it.
Are these lenses ridiculously small? Yes.
Are they capable? I think so.
And either way, it’s a ton of fun. Let’s check out the results!
Zhiyun Weebill Lab VS Zhiyun Crane Plus
If you’ve been around here a while, you’ll know it’s no secret how much I love my Zhiyun Crane Plus.
I’ve had a whole host of gimbals in the past, from the Crane 2 to the tiny Crane M, and for my setup the Crane Plus is absolutely my “Goldilocks Gimbal”.
So the Zhiyun Weebill Lab has some big boots to fill.
How does it compare?
The Best Micro Four Thirds Lenses
The best micro four thirds lenses
(in my opinion!)
I have a lot of lenses. Like… a LOT. Probably way too many lenses. But LOOK HOW CUTE THEY ARE! This is a family photo I can get on board with.
Instamic Review (with audio examples)
The Instamic is such a nerdy device. I think it’ll attract two sorts of people:
“What the heck is that and WHY?”
and
“THAT IS SO COOL *grabby hands*”
… I think you might be able to guess which category I fall into.
Luminar: 4 Killer features to make your photos better
I’ve used Luminar for about 6 months now, and I have to say, I’m very impressed. You get so much bang for your buck with a one off payment. No more monthly subscriptions! Wooo! It has gotten faster and more efficient with every update, and I can say with confidence it now runs like an absolute dream on my machine. Everything about this software is designed to be user friendly and FAST.
I’ve done some video tutorials over on my channel, but I’ll go through some of my favourite features for you now if you’re still on the fence.
Zhiyun Smooth 4 is now compatible with Filmic Pro!
You heard it right: you can now use the Smooth 4, in all its tactile glory, with Filmic Pro on both Android and IOS. This is a Big Deal. Let me tell you why.
10k Subscriber giveaway!
Well wow!
My little corner of the internet, the Micro Four Nerds YouTube channel, just hit 10k subscribers! I know this isn’t a lot compared to many other bigger channels, but I’m so proud!
Is Micro Four Thirds DEAD?
So rumour has it Panasonic are about to release a full frame flagship camera at the end of the month. Half of me is so excited. I love new, innovative technology.
I also love the micro four thirds system with all my heart and I am of course concerned with what might lie ahead. Here are my thoughts.
Wedding Season is CRAZY! - Little life update
I've been a wedding photographer since 2012, and a wedding videographer more recently since 2016. It is, absolutely, the most rewarding job I've ever had. Every day is completely different. There are crazy times, where you're rushed off your feet and losing your hair, and then there are times when you haven't had a job in weeks and you're wondering whether it was all some sort of fever-dream after all.
Aputure Tri-8c LED light review (spoiler: I love it)
The Aputure Tri-8c is a beast of a light. If you came here for a "yay or nay" then here it is in a nutshell: it's awesome! You can dial the colour temperature in, it's portable, built like a tank but not too heavy, comes in an amazing case, is battery powered or mains powered.... it's just so well thought out. I love it.
Why people should care a lot less about The Next Big Thing
Photography seems to me sometimes… a bit of a measuring competition (if you get my drift). Not that us micro four thirds users aren’t guilty of gear obsession - have you seen how many lenses I currently own! - but I do think, on the whole, the gear-heads tend to gravitate to full frame setups.
URTH Filters Review
URTH (previously Gobe) were kind enough to send me a set of their latest filters, and so I hopped on the ferry and went to the Isle of Man for a few days to put them through their paces.
Meike 25mm 1.8 review
I've reviewed a few Meike lenses recently, and they all share some amazing qualities. They're all built like tanks: full metal build, nice heavy feel to them, and they're all incredibly sharp. The Meike 25mm 1.8 is no different. It also brings a few new interesting characteristics to the table.
Zhiyun Crane Plus Review
While I've made a few videos on the Zhiyun Crane Plus, I don't think I've actually compiled my thoughts into a comprehensive review. So here it is, in all its disjointed glory!
Meike 28mm f2.8 review for Micro Four Thirds
The Meike 28mm f2.8 for micro four thirds is tiny lens is an interesting prospect. I was excited to get my hands on it and take it for a test drive.
Meike 25mm F2.0 Lens Review
I was very lucky to get my hands on this new Meike 25mm f2 lens before it was released to the general public. I've spent lots of time with it now, and it's fit into my kit quite nicely.
A Brief History of Micro Four Nerds
Just a quick blog to say WOOOO!
When I posted my first video to my YouTube channel on March 7th 2017, I was aiming to gain 100 subscribers within a year. That was my wildest dream goal. I thought, who the hell would want to listen to me rant and rave about cameras online?!
Lumix 25mm 1.4 lens review
I'm not going to beat around the bush, here. I think this might be my favourite lens of all time. Yes, it has its flaws, but... wow. This lens has such a magic ability to capture my ideas.
Three Days In Malta
Well. That was an eventful trip. I feel like I need a holiday to get over my holiday! It was busy, but I got to see a lot of cool places.
